Call for Applications to join 2021 - 2023 WFD Expert Work Group on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)
The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) seeks expressions of interest from individuals desiring to serve as WFD Experts together with other specialists in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction. The overall objective of the WFD Expert Group on DRR is to assist the WFD Secretariat in their daily work by providing specific expertise, guidance and advice related to humanitarian actions during emergencies.  Applicants can see examples of previous Expert Groups work on Position Papers and Statements on our website.

A coordinator will be appointed to this Expert Group on DRR to lead the Group’s work, guided by Terms of Reference based on the WFD Strategy 2020-2030, the WFD Action Plan 2020-2023, and the priorities as outlined by the WFD Board.

The WFD is seeking a coordinator and a number of expert members for the Expert Group on Disaster Risk Reduction. This Expert Group on Disaster Risk Reduction aims to represent deaf populations in the DRR and humanitarian action and policies fields.  Its role will be to provide an accessible platform with information, expert advice and resources to support those affected from disasters by:
 
1. Participating in working groups and any relevant work in the field of humanitarian action to ensure that the processes are inclusive and accessible for deaf populations.

2. Proactive in reaching out to Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) and other entities that serves and/or work with deaf populations through WFD’s partners and networks to consult with and identify effective mechanisms to support their engagement and participation in humanitarian action.

3. Establishing regular meetings with OPD members and other entities and cooperation agencies that serves and/or work with deaf populations via Zoom to seek feedback on their participation in humanitarian action and to jointly agree on mechanisms to strengthen their engagement both DRG and WFD.

4.Providing technical assistance and expert advice, either directly or indirectly, to the WFD Secretariat and WFD Ordinary Members in the matter.

5. Design, communicate and report progress on DRR deaf centered's work plan implementation internally and externally.

6. Identify current and potential donors for resource mobilization purposes, to introduce to the WFD.

7. Collaborating with other WFD expert group regarding DRR matters.

8. Developing data for research purposes.


In addition, Experts may be asked to, among other things, develop and revise WFD statements/documents, providing advice on different cases, and making recommendations to the WFD Board as outlined in the Terms of Reference.  

The Expert Group Coordinator will be consulted in the drafting process of the final Terms of Reference and the implementation time table will be decided in cooperation with the WFD Secretariat and the Expert Groups.

The coordinators and members of the Expert Groups will serve in a voluntary capacity and thus are not be paid or reimbursed for any expenses during their term. They are expected to actively take part in the work of their Group: participate in email discussions and report to the WFD Board twice a year as a group.

The normal period of service is a three-year term for Expert Group members and coordinators, starting in September 2021 and running until December 2023.   Experts or Coordinators serve at the discretion of the WFD Board.

In addition to the open call for applications, the WFD reserves the right to invite individuals to serve as WFD Expert Group members without applying for the role.
